Lost filling
A filling can come out when you chew something hard or sticky, especially if it is old. Here is what to do until your appointment, and when you should come in sooner.

Book a visit. If it does not hurt, there is no need to come in that same night, but do not leave the tooth like this for weeks: the cavity stays open and the tooth can decay further. Call us and we will book you in.
What to do now
- Take the filling out of your mouth. If the piece is still in your mouth, take it out so you do not swallow it. There is no need to keep it.
- Rinse and clean. Rinse with lukewarm water and brush your teeth gently, including the tooth that has lost its filling.
- Protect the tooth. You can cover the cavity with temporary filling material or dental wax from a pharmacy, following the instructions on the pack.
- Chew on the other side. On that side, avoid food that is hard, sticky, very sweet or very cold.
- Call to book. We will agree a time in the next few days, during clinic hours.
What not to do
- Do not stick the filling back in with household glue.
- Do not fill the hole with chewing gum or anything else unsuitable.
- Do not put aspirin or other tablets in the tooth or on the gum.
- Do not put off your appointment for weeks just because it does not hurt.
When to come in
Call now if
- It hurts badly or the pain wakes you at night.
- The gum around the tooth has swollen.
- Part of the tooth broke off along with the filling.
- The edge of the tooth cuts your tongue or cheek and you cannot cover it.
It can wait for an appointment if
- It does not hurt, or you feel only mild sensitivity to cold and sweet things.
- You have covered the cavity with temporary material from a pharmacy.
- You can eat on the other side without any trouble.
A lost filling is not usually a reason to call 112. Call 112 if a swelling appears that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or spreads towards your eye or neck, especially with a fever.
What we do at the clinic
The dentist examines the tooth and, if needed, takes an X-ray to see why the filling came out and whether there is decay underneath.
Often the tooth is cleaned and a new filling is placed at the same visit. If the tooth hurts and the nerve is affected, the nerve may need to be removed first.
You know the price before we start.
What it costs
Prices are in Romanian lei. A filling is from 400 lei, and the anaesthetic is included. If you have the treatment at the same visit, you do not pay for the consultation. The price may go up if the tooth is more damaged; you learn it before treatment.
| Consultation | from 150 lei (≈ 28 €) |
| Filling | from 400 lei (≈ 74 €) |
| Nerve removal | from 350 lei (≈ 65 €) |
The price covers everything: the anaesthetic is included, and you do not pay for the consultation if you have the treatment at the same visit. Outside opening hours the price may be higher; we tell you on the phone.
Questions
How long can I wait with a lost filling?
If it does not hurt, a few days, until an appointment. But do not leave the tooth like this for weeks, because it can decay further.
Can the old filling be put back?
No. A filling that has come out cannot be reused; the dentist places a new one after cleaning the tooth.
Why does the tooth hurt without its filling?
Without a filling, the tooth is exposed to cold, sweet things and food. Mild sensitivity is common. If the pain is strong or wakes you at night, call us today.
Is it all done in one visit?
Often, yes. If the nerve is affected, you may need more than one visit; the dentist will tell you at the consultation.
The phone is answered 24/7.
