Lost crown
A dental crown can come off when the cement underneath gives way. Here is how to keep it safe, what to do until your appointment, and when you should come in sooner.

Book a visit. If it does not hurt, you usually do not need to come in that same night; keep the crown, because it can often be put back. Call us and we will book you in.
What to do now
- Keep the crown. Rinse it gently with water and put it in a small box or a clean envelope. Bring it with you to the clinic.
- Rinse your mouth. Rinse with lukewarm water and brush your teeth gently, including the tooth that was under the crown.
- Protect the tooth. If the tooth is sensitive, avoid cold and sweet food on that side and chew on the other side.
- Ease the pain. If it hurts, you can take an anti-inflammatory or a painkiller from a pharmacy, following the patient leaflet.
- Call to book. Tell us whether you have the crown and whether it is in one piece. We will find the earliest time we can.
What not to do
- Do not stick the crown back on with household glue; it can make it harder to put back properly.
- Do not go to sleep with the crown pushed loosely back on: you could swallow or inhale it.
- Do not throw the crown away, even if it looks damaged.
- Do not chew on the tooth that has lost its crown.
When to come in
Call now if
- It hurts badly or the pain wakes you at night.
- The tooth under the crown has broken.
- The gum around it has swollen.
- You have swallowed the crown and feel discomfort.
It can wait for an appointment if
- It does not hurt, or you feel only mild sensitivity.
- You have kept the crown and it is in one piece.
- You can eat on the other side without any trouble.
Call 112 if you think you have inhaled the crown and you are coughing non-stop, finding it hard to breathe or have chest pain. If you have swallowed it and are breathing normally, call us and we will tell you what to do.
What we do at the clinic
The dentist examines the crown and the tooth underneath and, if needed, takes an X-ray.
If both the tooth and the crown are in good condition, the crown can often be cleaned and cemented back on at the same visit.
If the tooth has broken or the crown can no longer be used, the dentist explains your options and the price before any treatment.
What it costs
Prices are in Romanian lei. The consultation is from 150 lei, and you do not pay for it if you have the treatment at the same visit. The anaesthetic is included. We tell you the price for re-cementing the crown on the phone or at the consultation, before we start.
| Consultation | from 150 lei (≈ 28 €) |
| Filling | from 400 lei (≈ 74 €) |
| Nerve removal | from 350 lei (≈ 65 €) |
The price covers everything: the anaesthetic is included, and you do not pay for the consultation if you have the treatment at the same visit. Outside opening hours the price may be higher; we tell you on the phone.
Questions
Can my old crown be put back on?
Often, yes, if it is in one piece and the tooth underneath is healthy. The dentist will tell you at the consultation, after looking at both.
I have swallowed my crown. What should I do?
If you are breathing normally and have no pain, call us and we will tell you what to do. If you are coughing non-stop or finding it hard to breathe, call 112.
Can I stick it back on myself until I get to the clinic?
Not with household glue. Keep the crown in a small box and bring it with you; until then, chew on the other side to protect the uncovered tooth.
How long can I wait?
If it does not hurt, a few days, until an appointment. Do not leave the tooth uncovered for long, because it can break or shift.
The phone is answered 24/7.
