Knocked-out tooth
When a tooth comes right out of your mouth after a knock, what you do in the first few minutes matters. Here you will find how to keep it and how to get to the clinic as quickly as possible.

Call now. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being put back if it reaches a dentist within the first few minutes or hours. Call us now, even while you are still looking for the tooth, and we will tell you when you can come in.
What to do now
- Find the tooth and hold it by the crown. The crown is the white part you see when you smile. Do not touch the root: it carries the cells the tooth needs to reattach.
- If it is dirty, rinse it briefly. For a few seconds, with milk or saline solution; if you have neither, with cold water. Do not rub it, wipe it or wash it with soap.
- Put it in milk. In a small container of milk or saline solution. If you have neither, an adult can keep it in their mouth, between the cheek and the gum, taking care not to swallow it. Do not let it dry out.
- Stop the bleeding. Press on the gum with gauze or a clean handkerchief, biting gently, for 20–30 minutes. For swelling, put a cold compress on your lip or cheek.
- Call us and set off. Bring the tooth with you. At night or at the weekend, the on-call dentist comes to the clinic; we agree the time on the phone.
What not to do
- Do not hold the tooth by the root and do not rub the root, not even to clean it.
- Do not wrap it in a tissue or paper: the root dries out.
- Do not leave it in tap water for hours; water is only for a brief rinse when you have nothing else.
- If it is a child’s baby tooth, do not try to put it back; call us and tell us the child’s age.
- Do not wait to see how it goes: every minute counts.
When to come in
Call now if
- the tooth has come right out of your mouth
- the tooth has moved, been pushed in or out, or you can no longer close your mouth as before
- a tooth has broken and you can see a red spot in the middle of it
- the gum is bleeding and does not stop after 20–30 minutes of pressure
It can wait for an appointment if
- the tooth is in place and not loose, it is just a little sore to touch
- only a small corner of the tooth has chipped off, with no pain; see broken tooth
- your lip is bruised and swollen, but your teeth are whole and in place
Call 112 or go to a hospital A&E (UPU) if the blow to your head or face was hard, if you fainted, vomited or feel dizzy, if you cannot close your mouth or your jaw looks out of place, or if the bleeding will not stop. Hospital first, then the tooth: keep it in milk in the meantime.
What we do at the clinic
The dentist cleans the area, checks the tooth and the socket it came out of, and takes an X-ray if needed. If possible, they put the tooth back and attach it to the neighbouring teeth with a thin splint for a few weeks, long enough for it to settle.
A tooth that has been put back usually needs root canal treatment in the following weeks, plus check-ups. If the tooth cannot be put back, the dentist explains your options for the gap.
You know the price before we start. No one can tell you in advance whether the tooth will reattach; the dentist tells you what they see and what comes next.
How much it costs
Prices are in Romanian lei. The consultation is from 150 lei, and you do not pay for it if you have the treatment at the same visit. We tell you the price for putting the tooth back and splinting it on the phone or at the clinic, before we start; it depends on how many teeth are affected. See all prices.
| Consultation | from 150 lei (≈ 28 €) |
| Nerve removal | from 350 lei (≈ 65 €) |
The price covers everything: the anaesthetic is included, and you do not pay for the consultation if you have the treatment at the same visit. Outside opening hours the price may be higher; we tell you on the phone.
Questions
How long do I have to get there?
As little as possible. The chances are best when the tooth is put back within the first hour, but do not give up if more time has passed: call us and bring the tooth.
Can I put it back myself?
If it is an adult tooth, it is clean and you feel able to, you can gently push it back into place, holding it by the crown, then bite softly on a handkerchief. If it does not slide in easily, do not force it: keep it in milk and come in.
The tooth broke rather than fell out. What should I do?
Keep the broken piece, also in milk or saline solution, and call us. Read what to do about a broken tooth.
Do you treat children?
Call us and tell us the child’s age and what happened. We will tell you on the phone whether we can help or whether it is better to go to a children’s dental clinic.
The phone is answered 24/7.
