Broken tooth: what to do now
A tooth that is chipped, cracked or broken, after a knock or after biting on something hard. Here is what to do until you reach the clinic, and how soon you need to come in.

Call today. Even if it does not hurt, a broken tooth is left exposed and can break further. It can often wait a few hours; call us today and we will tell you whether to come in now or during opening hours.
What to do now
- Rinse gently. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water, without swishing hard. This clears away debris and lets you see what has broken.
- Keep the piece. If you have found the broken piece, put it in a glass of milk or saline solution and bring it with you. Sometimes the dentist can use it.
- Cold compress. If you were hit or your lip is swollen, hold a cold compress on your cheek for 10 minutes, then take a break.
- Ease the pain. If it hurts, you can take an anti-inflammatory or a painkiller from a pharmacy, following the patient leaflet.
- Cover the sharp edge. If the edge cuts your tongue or cheek, cover it with dental wax from a pharmacy. Chew on the other side.
What not to do
- Do not glue the piece back on with household glue.
- Do not chew on the broken tooth or bite anything hard.
- Do not put aspirin or other tablets directly on the gum or the tooth.
- Avoid very cold or very hot food and drinks if the tooth is sensitive.
- Do not wait for it to settle on its own if you see a red or pink spot in the middle of the tooth.
When to come in
Call now if
- You can see a red or pink spot in the break, or the tooth is bleeding.
- The pain is strong and does not ease with your usual painkiller.
- The tooth is loose, has moved, or your teeth no longer close the way they did.
- The tooth broke after a blow to the face.
It can wait for an appointment if
- Only a corner has chipped off and it does not hurt.
- You feel only mild sensitivity to cold.
- The edge does not cut you, or you have covered it with dental wax.
Call 112 or go to a hospital A&E (UPU) if the tooth broke in a hard blow to the head and you lost consciousness, are vomiting, feel dizzy or confused, if you can no longer close your mouth, or if the bleeding will not stop.
What we do at the clinic
The dentist examines the tooth and, if needed, takes an X-ray to see how deep the break goes and whether the nerve is affected.
A small chip can often be rebuilt with filling material at the same visit. If the break reaches the nerve, the nerve may need to be removed before the tooth is rebuilt.
If the tooth cannot be saved, the dentist explains your options before doing anything. You know the price before we start.
What it costs
Prices are in Romanian lei. The consultation is from 150 lei, and you do not pay for it if you have the treatment at the same visit. The anaesthetic is included. The final price depends on how large the break is; you learn it before treatment. Outside opening hours the price may be higher, and we tell you on the phone.
| Consultation | from 150 lei (≈ 28 €) |
| Filling | from 400 lei (≈ 74 €) |
| Nerve removal | from 350 lei (≈ 65 €) |
| Extraction | from 500 lei (≈ 93 €) |
The price covers everything: the anaesthetic is included, and you do not pay for the consultation if you have the treatment at the same visit. Outside opening hours the price may be higher; we tell you on the phone.
Questions
My broken tooth does not hurt. Do I still need to come in?
Yes, though usually not that same night. A broken tooth can break further or become infected, even if it does not hurt now. Call us and we will agree a time.
Can the broken piece be stuck back on?
Sometimes, if the piece is whole and you have kept it in milk or saline solution. The dentist will tell you at the consultation whether it can be used.
What if the whole tooth has come out?
Then the first minutes matter. Read the page about a knocked-out tooth and call us now.
How long does the repair take?
It depends on the break. A small chip can often be repaired in one visit; if the nerve is affected, you may need more. The dentist will tell you at the consultation.
